Freshman Morgan Watson went 4-4 at the plate and pitched a complete game while sophomore Chelsea Coleman went 3-4 with a home run and four RBI’s in propelling the MCLA softball team to a convincing 14-1 five-inning win over Southern Vermont College (SVC).
The top of the second inning was when things really picked up for the Trailblazers. After getting out of the first inning up 2-1, the Blazers tacked on five big runs in the top half of the second inning, putting them in a comfortable 7-1 lead over SVC. Coleman recorded an RBI double to cap off the inning for the Blazers.
The third inning proved to be quiet for both teams, as neither was able to record a run, and the Blazers were only able to get a single hit in the inning.
The Blazers erupted again in the fourth inning. Watson recorded an RBI double, while Coleman singled in another run earlier in the inning. The team scored another four runs in the fifth innings, with the big punch being when Coleman drilled a ball over the center field wall and recorded her first home run of the season.
Freshman Kayla Baker, Erika Quackenbush, and Ashley Wilson all recorded a double in the game, while Watson recorded two herself and Coleman had hers in the second inning. The 14 runs over five innings was enough to grant the run rule win for the Blazers.
Watson also pitched a complete game and recorded eight strikeouts as well as the win putting her record to 3-6.
With the win, MCLA improves to 5-20 while the Mountaineers drop to 4-13 on the year.
